Abstract: The article discusses the issues of origin, content and discrepancies in the use of the concept of "tourist attraction". Tourist attractions are considered as a type of tourist resource that is used for organizing educational and other tours and excursions with the aim of its sustainable development. It is proved that attractions can be not only cultural and historical, but also natural resources, and in some cases new innovative objects. Natural and cultural-historical objects and phenomena become tourist attractions when they are involved in tourist production activities. But new types of tourist distances arise in the case of new original ideas to attract a new generation to visit a certain tourist distance, often the tourist business "constructs" attractions even in the absence of a recreational resource. The main goal of this scientific work is precisely to identify tourist attractions and study their functions and role in ensuring the sustainability of tourism.
