Abstract: The vocabulary that is part of the modern youth jargon is considered in this article. Analyzing the semantic and linguistic content of slang, the authors attempt to identify the reasons for the use of slang by the younger generation, comparing the language of high school students and freshmen. The diversity of the collected language material makes it possible to identify the reasons why the use of slang, in the opinion of young people, wins against the background of the words of the literary language. The objectivity of the presented material is also emphasized by the fact that one of the reasons for the activity of slang is the low level of speech culture of the younger generation.
